Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa

Legislative watch

Watch Here for Iowa Legislative Updates!

Animal advocates across Iowa fought hard during last legislative session to pass a bill that would allow Iowa inspectors, upon receiving a complaint, to inspect commercial dog breeders licensed by the USDA in the state of Iowa. Currently Iowa inspectors do not have this right, and it is left up to USDA (federal) inspectors who often have more territory than they can reasonably oversee. Consequently, unscrupulous dog breeders breed large numbers of dogs in facilities with deplorable conditions—known as puppy mills—with no concern for the health and welfare of the dogs.

Unfortunately, the bill did not pass last session but animal advocates are rallying to work toward this goal again. One of the most important steps you can take is to contact Iowa Voters for Companion Animals and ask to be added to their e-mail list. Contact Mary LaHay at mlahay@iowavca.org. Their web site is www.iavotersforcompanionanimals.org.

This organization is forming a voting block. That means when legislative issues arise that affect the welfare of animals—whether it’s the “puppy mill bill” or other concerns—you will receive an e-mail with an update on the situation and a request for you to contact your state rep and/or senator to voice your opinion on the issue. The group even provides links to help you quickly find the names and contact information for your legislators if you are unsure who they are.

By making our state representatives and senators aware of our feelings about pending legislation that affects animals, we have the ability to make a difference in the lives of animals in Iowa. We are the voice for those who cannot speak.
