Adopt a Friend & Save a Dog’s Life

These dogs can be euthanized after 7 days.
(If no dogs are listed here, that’s good news!  It means there are no dogs on death row today.)

Breed Disclosure: Due to the fact that most of our adoptable pets are strays, we can not guarantee their breed. We list the pet’s breed as the one that best matches the physical appearance, temperament, and personality of the animal. The pet may also be listed as a mix when it’s actually a purebred.

Meet the beautiful JACKSON.  Jackson was picked up as a stray in Jones County, where he had reportedly been standing in the middle of the road, stopping traffic and wandering around for about 2 weeks!  Jackson is a tall boy and weighs about 65 lbs.  Jackson is a very well behaved boy, he did not mess his kennel so we believe he is housetrained.  Jackson walked well on the leash and did not pull.  He also stopped when told, as well as sat on command.  We also think he is used to riding in a vehicle because when the volunteer walked towards it, he immediately went to the truck and sat by the door to get in.  Jackson did not seem to be bothered by the volunteer’s children either.  There were also wild cats around while the volunteer was walking him, he started to chase them, but once he felt the leash pull he stopped.  He is a very happy boy and likes his humans.  When our volunteer went to leave, he was very talkative, like a yowl and yoo hoo.  He was sad to see the volunteer go.  Otherwise, he never barked at all, not even at the cat.  **Indoor homes only need apply!!  If you are interested in meeting Jackson, please contact Melanie at (319) 447-1495 or email Mas7074@msn.com.  Jackson needs a home by July 28, 2008.  The adoption fee is on a sliding scale; $90 to $150.  You decide the amount that is right for you to give.  We have an all volunteer staff so your entire fee goes towards saving AWF's rescue animals.  If your donation covers Jackson's medical costs, then the remainder of your donation will go towards helping save another homeless pet!  Jones County, like many smaller counties, has no animal shelter.  All strays are held for 7 days in local vet clinics in order to be claimed by their families.

ROLAND is a dirty and travel-weary lab/Great Pyrenees mix who was found on the outskirts of Monticello.  However, beneath his scruffy exterior shines the soul of a beautiful dog.  He is far too thin, indicating that he has not had someone to count on to feed him on a regular basis.  Are you ready to give Roland the loving and secure home he deserves?  Please contact David at (319) 480-7061 or email dboehm82@yahoo.com.  The adoption fee is $90, which includes neuter and all vaccinations.  Jones County, like many smaller counties, has no animal shelter.  All strays are held for 7 days in local vet clinics in order to be claimed by their families.

Adoption Procedure
Since Jones County has no animal shelter, dogs that are picked up by the sheriff’s department are held at one of several veterinary clinics. If a dog is not claimed within seven days, the dog is put down. We have given each dog a name for the purpose of identification when we receive phone inquiries. (Since they are strays, we have no way of knowing what they have been called in the past.) We understand that their new families may decide to give them a different name. That’s OK with us—just as long as each dog finds a caring and responsible home!

If you are interested in meeting one of these dogs to determine if he/she is the right match for your family, please call us immediately at the number provided in the dog’s bio. We have several adoption coordinators, so there is often more than one phone number listed. If you have problems with any of the phone numbers, call our main office at 563-826-2208.

Adoption Fee
Under Iowa law, a dog must be spayed/neutered and updated on vaccinations before he/she can leave the vet clinic. Any person adopting a dog will be responsible for paying the veterinary clinic that is holding the dog. The total fee will depend on which clinic is holding the dog (each clinic has its own rates) as well as the weight of the dog. However, the adoption fee will usually range from $90-$100.
